Cradle Mountain World Heritage
Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake offer superb natural beauty, wildlife and Tasmania’s premier day walking opportunities on this tour day designed for the active traveller. Experience ancient rainforests, alpine heaths, glacial lakes, rugged mountains and close encounters with local wildlife. Cradle Mountain National Park is an area of iconic scenery with a wide variety of walking trails to choose from. With around 5 hours to spend in the National Park, we leave our walking itinerary flexible to suit guests and weather conditions.
After departing Launceston we enjoy a short stop in Sheffield – The Town of Murals. Sheffield is a small and quirky rural village in the foothills of the mountains. It is Tasmania’s outdoor art gallery, featuring over 100 paintings on building walls that depict the history of the Cradle Mountain region, providing a perfect taster of what is to come.
Arriving into Cradle Mountain National Park, we prepare for the walking opportunities ahead. We begin with one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks, the Enchanted Walk trail — an easy 20-minute circuit following Pencil Pine Creek.
The main hike begins from Dove Lake with 2 walking options: the iconic Dove Lake Circuit, a 6km easy-moderate track taking 2-3 hours, or for more avid hikers, Marion’s Lookout, a medium grade 4km hike with steep sections offering breathtaking 360° views at 1200m. Along the way, enjoy lunch breaks, photograph landscapes, spot friendly wombats, and explore Weindorfer’s Chalet and Forest Walk with ancient King Billy Pines.
On the return to Launceston, stop to refresh at Van Dieman’s Land Ice Creamery and Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm. Arrive back around 6:00pm after a full day of unforgettable Cradle Mountain experiences.
